How Antioxidants Benefit the Skin

How Antioxidants Benefit the Skin

Antioxidants – it’s a word you hear a lot about in skincare. But what are they exactly? And how do they benefit your skin? It’s time for a quick skin care science lesson on antioxidants.

What Are Antioxidants?

An antioxidant is a molecule. They can be natural or man-made, but either way they help to delay and/or prevent cell damage caused by free radicals. These are the harmful chemicals that become present in the body as a byproduct of food being turned into energy, but they can also be in the food that we eat, in the air that we breath and a reaction to the sunlight on our skin and/or eyes. They cause a mess of trouble in the skin and other parts of the body by devouring electrons and changing the structure of DNA.

Antioxidants ward off free radicals by feeding them with a supply of electrons so they don’t attack cells. There are hundreds, possibly thousands of antioxidants, but a few of the most common ones you may have heard of include:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Lycopene
  • Beta-Carotene
Antioxidents that benefit the skin

Each antioxidant is chemically unique, and they aren’t interchangeable with one another. They all work in different ways and have various effects on the body. But one thing’s for sure – free radicals are serious skin agers that antioxidants can fight against.

How Do Antioxidants Help the Skin?

There are a lot of ways that antioxidants can help improve the skin. Benefits can be had by adding antioxidant rich food into your diet and/or by using skin care products that contain antioxidants.

When it comes to skin, antioxidants are fighting off free radicals from the sun by working from the inside out. The skin cells are being protected against the damaging effects and destruction of free radicals, but that’s not all antioxidants are doing. Some antioxidants like Vitamin C and selenium also promote cell growth and skin tissue growth. This is turn aids in the shedding and renewal of skin, which can help to soften fine lines and wrinkles. Others, like vitamin B3 provide anti-inflammation benefits.

When choosing your skin care products look for the following antioxidants:

    • Vitamin C
    • Vitamin E
    • Green Tea
    • Niacinamide/B3
    • Grape Seed
    • Lycopene
    • Resveratrol
    • Coffee Berry

Some skin care products, like VIVITE, use a combination of antioxidants that are balanced to provide a range of benefits.

Antioxidant Overload

It should be noted that with antioxidants you can have too much of a good thing. Regular doses of antioxidant supplements can be good for improving skin, fighting off heart disease, preventing eye disease and a host of other ailments. However, taken in high doses antioxidant supplements can actually have a negative impact on your health.

A 2007 study found that a five-antioxidant combination supplement taken daily actually increased women’s chances of getting skin cancer, although men did not show a higher risk for skin cancer. Another study called the Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention Study sought to prove whether the antioxidants vitamin E and beta-carotene could help prevent lung cancer. What the researchers found was that high doses of beta-carotene actually appeared to increase the chance of male smokers getting lung cancer.

If you’re taking antioxidant supplements the old saying ‘everything in moderation’ definitely applies. Stick to taking only the recommended daily amount and not a milligram more.
